to distance sampling: 25-27 November<br>
The emphasis of the workshop will be on how to design
a good distance sampling survey, how to collect good
data and how to do preliminary analyses using pen and
paper, a calculator and a computer spreadsheet. Target
audience: Any wildlife biologist who wants to design,
collect or analyze distance sampling survey data.
Complete beginners are very welcome! Those with more
experience may: (i) benefit from the refresher, (ii)
learn something from the detailed discussion of
assumptions, how to meet them, and what happens if
things go wrong, (iii) be able to use the material as
a basis for teaching others.</span></div>

id="yiv4410705037yui_3_13_0_rc_1_1_1381344074844_3710">An
ability to understand and undertake basic statistical
analyses is essential to the modern ecologist, yet
many ecology students lack confidence and ability in
statistical analysis. In fact, the basic statistics
that should be mastered by all ecologists requires no
advanced mathematical ability, but rather a basic
grasp of probability, and access to appropriate
statistical software. In recent years, the free and
open source statistical software program âRâ has
become the package of choice for many academic
statisticians and ecologists world-wide. This
popularity is due not only to the completely free
distributions that are available online, but to the
extraordinarily powerful and rapidly growing set of
user-built packages that implement cutting edge
statistical models, often even before the new methods
have been published in the scientific literature.
Unfortunately, compared to spreadsheets and many
software programs familiar to ecologists, R has a
rather steep learning curve. This course offers
students the chance to learn basic statistical methods
at the same time as learning R. The course aims to
give students confidence in their ability to undertake
basic statistical analysis, give an awareness of the
ways in which these models can be extended, and to
provide basic competence in using R.</span></div>
